The FWYC Capdevielle team traveled to Pensacola last Saturday for the first of a planned series of scrimmages between Florida Panhandle Capdevielle teams.
Organized by PYC's Hunter Riddle and Bernie Knight, the scrimmage gave the Florida teams the opportunity to tune-up their tactics and teamwork as the 2007 Capdevielle season gets under way.
A total of six Flying Scots from four clubs participated. FWYC brought two boats, crewed by Tammi Brandt, Jennifer and Sam Grant, John O'Donnell, Jeff Brown, Darren Cooke and Jim Coulter. Pensacola Yacht Club, who hosted the scrimmage, also sailed two boats. St Andrews Bay Yacht Club and Pensacola Beach Yacht Club filled out the field with one boat each.
Pensacola Yacht Club provided a race committee boat with a heated cabin and hot chocolate for sailors waiting their turns on the water. With the temperature never breaking out of the 40s, the amenities were much appreciated.
After a dozen practice starts, three short races on a windward-leeward course were held.
As Hunter put it, it's time the GYA's Lipton Cup come to Florida and by working together the Panhandle teams will surely increase their chances of bringing the trophy to the Emerald Coast. Thanks to all the folks at PYC for getting the ball rolling - the next scrimmage will be announced soon!
